Doug Phillips of Discovering Alabama is Coming to BirdFest

Doug Phillips

Dr. Doug Phillips, popular creator and host of the award-winning Alabama Public Television show Discovering Alabama, will be a special guest at the first Alabama Coastal BirdFest. Phillips will be autographing his new book, Discovering Alabama Wetlands, during the free, day long Bird Expo held on the grounds of Faulkner State Community College in Fairhope on Saturday, Oct. 16, and he will be the speaker at Historic Blakeley State Park that evening.

Phillips said he is pleased to be taking part in BirdFest "The Alabama coastal area is among the more naturally appealing and diverse places in the nation. Not the least aspect of it is the remarkable Mobile/Tensaw delta and the surroundings wetlands, which have all sort of incredible bird habitats. Any time we can attract caring people to outdoor opportunities that are not only recreational but educational, that’s a great thing."

Phillips created the show Discovering Alabama in 1985 as an outgrowth of his own extensive travels throughout the state. As series host and producer, he combines extensive knowledge of Alabama’s natural features with an intense personal commitment to conservation and education. The show is also rooted in a sentiment shared by many Alabamians who believe that, as other parts of the nation continue to lose their native natural surroundings, Alabama’s abundant wild lands help make our state exceptional.

Advance registration is required for all BirdFest tours and dinners. Registration for the Saturday night, Oct. 16, Birding by Night at Historic Blakeley State Park, which includes a guided birding tour, seafood dinner, and a presentation by Dr. Phillips, is just $25 per person.
