Steven Griles, US Deputy Secretary of the Interior, to be BirdFest Speaker

J. Steven Griles, Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior, will be a featured speaker at the Alabama Coastal BirdFest, according to one of the BirdFest organizers, David Yeager, director of the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program.

"We have been hoping that Mr. Griles would be able to attend, and I am pleased to say that we have now received written confirmation," said Yeager. "We sincerely want to thank Representative Jo Bonner for his help in securing Mr.
Griles appearance."

Mr. Griles will be speaking at the evening reception on the deck of the WWII battleship, the USS Alabama, on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, the first day of the Alabama Coastal BirdFest. Tickets to the reception are $20, and include a sunset birding tour of Battleship Park; pre-registration is required. . "Mr. Griles appearance at the Alabama Coastal BirdFest is another acknowledgement of the importance of what we are doing to help bring awareness to the Alabama Gulf Coast as a premiere birding destination," said Dr. John Borom, president of Mobile Bay Audubon, another festival sponsor. "We’re happy that he will join our list of speakers and presenters, which already includes a number of other well-known environmental and birding experts." Proceeds from the festival will be used to help secure and improve bird habitats along the Alabama Gulf Coast.
