Kathy Hicks—BirdFest’s Designer Extraordinaire

Kathy Hicks was a student at Faulkner State College’s graphic design department when she created the original logo for Alabama Coastal BirdFest in 2004. Since then, she has helped create most of the annual posters, was featured photographer in 2009, and creates the ads for BirdFest that run in national magazines.

As a photographer, Kathy modestly calls herself an “advanced amateur,” but she has won several awards including 1st place in the Animals category in the 2011 Popular Photography Magazine’s Annual Reader’s Contest. She’s had images used by the American Birding Association, The Nature Conservancy, Science Daily Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, Mobile Bay Magazine, and many others.

As a graphic designer, in addition to the BirdFest logo, Kathy designed logos for Mobile Bay Audubon Society, the Bald Eagle Bash, and many other regional organizations and events.

A native of Hollinger’s Island in Mobile, Kathy has lived in Baldwin County for twenty years. In 2005, she graduated Summa Cum Laude at Faulkner State Community College with an applied science degree in Commercial Art/Graphic Design. At Faulkner, she received Awards of Merit and Excellence from the Art Department and the President’s Award in 2005. She’s employed by Wild Native as a Nature Guide for Five Rivers Delta Safaris as well as by Site One as a web site designer.
